Bespoke Timber Staircases in Yorkshire
Handcrafted Bespoke Timber Staircases
Traditional & Contemporary Designs
Supply Only or Complete Installation
At James Wilding Joinery, we design and manufacture bespoke timber staircases from our workshop in Rylstone, near Skipton. Individually made to order, each staircase is developed around the architecture, proportions and practical requirements of the property.
From traditional timber staircases for period homes and barn conversions to cleaner contemporary designs for renovations, extensions and new-build properties, our team can develop the staircase, balustrade and architectural detailing around the individual project.
Working with homeowners, architects, builders and trade professionals throughout Yorkshire and surrounding areas, we offer both supply-only and professional installation depending on the requirements of the project.
Bespoke Timber Staircases
A staircase forms an important architectural feature within a property, connecting different levels while contributing to the character and proportions of the surrounding interior. Bespoke manufacture allows the design to be considered around the available space, architectural style and individual requirements of the project.
Depending on the design, this may include the configuration of the staircase, strings, treads and risers, newel posts, handrails, spindles and balustrades, alongside more individual architectural details.
Whether the project involves replacing an existing staircase, creating a new staircase within a renovation or designing one as part of a new home, each commission is individually considered and made to order in our Yorkshire workshop.
Timber & Materials
The choice of timber can have a significant influence on the appearance and character of a staircase. European Oak is particularly well suited to staircase joinery where its distinctive grain and natural character are intended to remain visible, while other timbers may be considered according to the design, finish and requirements of the project.
Timber can be combined with different balustrade materials and finishes to create either a traditional or more contemporary appearance. The specification is developed around the staircase and surrounding interior rather than relying on a fixed range of standard designs.
Traditional & Contemporary Staircase Design
Bespoke manufacture allows the detailing of a staircase to be developed around the architecture of the property. For traditional interiors, this might include turned or shaped spindles, substantial newel posts, timber balustrades and carefully considered mouldings and profiles.
For contemporary properties, cleaner lines, simpler profiles and combinations of timber and glass can create a more understated architectural feature while retaining the warmth and character of natural timber.
Details such as cut strings, bullnose steps, handrails, newels, spindles and balustrades can be considered as part of the overall design, with proportions and finishes selected to complement the surrounding interior.
Made in Our Yorkshire Workshop
Our bespoke timber staircases are manufactured in our workshop in Rylstone, near Skipton, where traditional joinery skills are combined with modern manufacturing techniques.
From timber selection and machining through to assembly and finishing, each staircase is individually manufactured around the agreed design and specification.
Where other bespoke joinery forms part of the same project, the staircase can also be considered alongside internal doors, fitted furniture and other architectural joinery to create a more coordinated approach throughout the property.
Supply Only or Installation
Our bespoke timber staircases are available on a supply-only basis for builders, contractors and customers arranging their own installation, or as part of a design, manufacture and installation service where appropriate.
Where installation is provided by James Wilding Joinery, our team has a detailed understanding of how the staircase has been designed and manufactured, allowing the fitting process to be carefully coordinated around the joinery and requirements of the property.
