Premium timbers including Accoya®, Oak & Sapele
A beautifully crafted external timber door is more than simply an entrance to your home. It creates the first impression of your property while providing security, thermal efficiency and protection from the British weather. At James Wilding Joinery, we design and manufacture bespoke external timber doors that combine traditional craftsmanship with modern precision, thoughtful design and dependable performance.
Every door is handcrafted to order in our workshop in Rylstone, near Skipton, using premium timbers including Accoya®, European Oak and Sapele. Whether restoring a period cottage, renovating a Georgian townhouse, replacing the entrance to a listed building or creating a contemporary architectural statement, each door is tailored to complement the character of your property.
From glazing and mouldings to architectural hardware, factory-applied finishes and high-performance security, every detail is carefully considered to create a beautiful entrance that delivers exceptional durability, energy efficiency and weather protection.
From our Yorkshire workshop, we create bespoke external timber doors for homes throughout the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas.
Overview
Every property is different, which is why our bespoke external timber doors are designed around the architecture, proportions and character of your home. From traditional Georgian and Victorian entrance doors to cottage-style designs, heritage reproductions and contemporary front doors, each commission is created specifically for the property.
Design flexibility across proportions, panel arrangements, mouldings, glazing and architectural ironmongery allows us to create everything from carefully reproduced period designs to individually developed contemporary doors. Matching sidelights, fanlights and decorative glazing can also be incorporated where appropriate.
Whether replacing a single front door or specifying bespoke external joinery as part of a wider renovation, every design is carefully considered to sit naturally within the architecture of the building.
Why Choose Timber?
Timber has been the material of choice for beautiful entrance doors for centuries, offering character and craftsmanship that composite and metal alternatives simply cannot replicate. Every piece of timber has its own distinctive grain and texture, creating an entrance that is truly individual.
Carefully selected timber provides exceptional strength, thermal performance and durability. Combined with precision craftsmanship, high-performance weather sealing and professional factory finishing, bespoke timber entrance doors offer excellent insulation, dependable security and protection from the British weather.
Timber can also be repaired, restored and refinished throughout its serviceable life. Responsibly sourced timber is a renewable building material, making it a considered choice for homeowners seeking beautiful, high-quality external joinery.
WHy Choose Accoya?
Accoya® has become the benchmark for premium timber joinery and is one of our preferred materials for bespoke external timber doors. Through an advanced acetylation process, it offers exceptional durability, dimensional stability and weather resistance, making it ideally suited to the British climate.
Accoya is highly resistant to swelling, shrinking and twisting, helping external timber doors maintain their precise fit and smooth operation throughout changing seasons. Its outstanding dimensional stability can also help factory-applied finishes perform for longer, reducing maintenance while preserving the appearance of your door.
Manufactured from responsibly sourced timber and backed by industry-leading warranties, Accoya combines strong environmental credentials with exceptional durability and performance, making it an excellent choice for bespoke external timber doors.

We specify premium-quality products from trusted manufacturers including From the Anvil, Croft Architectural Hardware and Coastal Group, offering an extensive choice of traditional and contemporary designs and finishes.

Bespoke Glazing
Glazing plays an important role in both the appearance and performance of a bespoke external timber door. Whether you are introducing additional natural light into an entrance hall or faithfully reproducing the detailing of a period property, we offer a wide range of high-performance glazing options tailored to your project.
Our glazing options include argon-filled double glazing, toughened safety glass, laminated security glass, decorative glazing, obscure glass and textured designs, allowing every entrance door to balance natural light, privacy, security and thermal performance.
For heritage properties, Heritage Double Glazing may be appropriate where traditional proportions need to be considered alongside improved thermal performance. Every glazing specification is carefully considered to balance appearance, natural light, privacy, security and energy efficiency.
Factory Finishing
A beautifully crafted external timber door deserves an equally exceptional finish.
Every door is professionally prepared and factory finished in our dedicated spray facility in Rylstone, near Skipton, using advanced Teknos microporous coating systems. These specialist finishes protect against moisture, UV exposure and the changing British climate while allowing the timber to breathe naturally.
We can colour-match most paint specifications, including Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Dulux and the complete RAL Colour Collection. We also offer a carefully selected range of premium stains to enhance the natural beauty of Accoya®, European Oak and Sapele.
Every external timber door undergoes a thorough quality inspection before leaving our workshop, ensuring the finish, operation and craftsmanship meet our standards.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are bespoke timber external doors energy efficient?
Yes. Every external timber door is manufactured using high quality timber, high-performance weather seals and modern glazing to provide excellent thermal insulation while helping reduce heat loss.
Can external doors be manufactured in Accoya®?
Yes. Accoya® is one of our preferred timber choices for external doors due to its exceptional dimensional stability, durability and resistance to changing weather conditions.
Can you match an existing period door?
Yes. We regularly manufacture bespoke replacement doors for listed buildings, period homes and conservation projects, carefully reproducing original proportions, mouldings and architectural detailing where required.
Can I choose my own paint colour?
Yes. We can colour-match most RAL, Farrow & Ball, Little Greene or Dulux paint colours, together with a wide range of premium timber stains.
Do I need planning permission to replace an external timber door?
Replacement external doors do not usually require planning permission where the appearance of the property remains broadly unchanged. However, additional permissions may be required for listed buildings, properties within conservation areas or where specific planning restrictions apply.
Building Regulations are separate from planning permission and may also apply to replacement external doors. Requirements vary depending on the property and the work involved, so we recommend checking with your Local Planning Authority or Building Control where appropriate.
For heritage and listed building projects, we can provide drawings and joinery specifications to support planning or listed building consent applications where required.
