At James Wilding Joinery, we carefully select timber according to the requirements of each project, considering factors including strength, dimensional stability, appearance, weather resistance and the desired finish. From our workshop in Rylstone, near Skipton, we manufacture bespoke timber windows, doors, staircases and fitted joinery using carefully selected materials appropriate to each application.
For external joinery, we regularly work with Accoya®, Sapele and European Oak, selecting the timber according to the individual project and required finish. European Oak is equally suited to many internal applications, where its distinctive grain and natural character can become an important feature of the finished joinery. Tulipwood is another excellent choice for internal joinery, particularly where a smooth painted finish is required.

Accoya® Timber for Bespoke Windows & Doors
As an Accoya® Approved Manufacturer, James Wilding Joinery uses Accoya for a wide range of bespoke external joinery, including timber windows and doors.
Accoya is a modified timber produced using an acetylation process that improves its dimensional stability and durability. Its stability helps reduce the swelling and shrinkage associated with changes in moisture, making it particularly well suited to precision-made external joinery.
Accoya can be machined to create traditional mouldings, glazing bars and bespoke timber profiles, making it suitable for traditional and heritage windows as well as contemporary windows, doors and architectural joinery. Its dimensional stability also makes it well suited to professional factory-applied coating systems.
For projects where Accoya is being considered, our team can advise on its suitability alongside the other timbers available for the design, application and desired finish.

Sapele Hardwood for Bespoke Timber Windows & Doors
Sapele is a hardwood valued for its strength, stability and distinctive natural appearance. Its characteristics make it well suited to external joinery, including bespoke timber windows and doors.
Sapele machines well for traditional mouldings, glazing bars, door profiles and other bespoke architectural details, providing considerable flexibility across different window and door designs.
Sapele is also known for its attractive interlocking grain and naturally rich colouring. It can be finished with stains and protective coatings that showcase the character of the timber or professionally painted where a particular colour scheme is required.
Its combination of strength, workability and appearance makes Sapele a versatile choice for both traditional and contemporary external joinery.

European Oak for Bespoke Windows, Doors & Staircases
European Oak is a premium hardwood valued for its strength, distinctive grain and natural character. Its versatility makes it suitable for both internal and external bespoke joinery, particularly where the appearance of the timber forms an important part of the finished design.
At James Wilding Joinery, we use carefully selected European Oak across a wide range of projects, including bespoke timber windows, external and internal doors, staircases, fitted furniture and architectural joinery. Its distinctive appearance complements both traditional and contemporary properties, from period homes and country cottages to barn conversions and modern architectural projects.
European Oak is particularly attractive where the natural character of the timber is intended to remain visible. Its distinctive grain and colouring can be enhanced with carefully selected stains, oils and protective finishes according to the application and desired appearance.

Tulipwood for Bespoke Internal Joinery
Tulipwood is a versatile hardwood particularly well suited to high-quality internal joinery. Its fine, relatively even texture machines cleanly and provides a smooth surface for painted finishes, making it a popular choice for bespoke internal doors, fitted furniture and architectural joinery.
At James Wilding Joinery, we use Tulipwood where a smooth painted finish and precise detailing are important. It can be machined to create panelled doors, mouldings, frames and other bespoke profiles, allowing considerable design flexibility across both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Unlike timbers selected primarily to showcase their natural grain, Tulipwood is often chosen for joinery that will receive a painted factory finish. This allows the proportions and detailing of the finished joinery to take visual precedence while providing an excellent base for professional finishing.
We primarily use Tulipwood for internal applications rather than exposed external windows and doors, where timbers such as Accoya®, Sapele and European Oak may be more appropriate depending on the requirements of the project.
